--The MaCKRO 2015 annual meeting will be held on Thursday November 19th from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the Dysarts Broadway Restaurant and Flatbread Pub located on 1110 Broadway Street in Bangor. The meeting will take place in the meeting/conference room located in back of the retail store portion of the overall facility. Following is the basic agenda for the meeting;
6:00 – 7:00 - Gathering, socializing and eating (we will just order from the menu)
7:00 – 8:00 - 2015 summary, brief committee reports, 2015 flatwater series awards, business meeting, looking ahead to 2016
8:00 – 9:00 – Any leftover discussions and more socializing

---4/17 Update: On eve of the Sou, race Director Rick O'Donald reports that the level of the Souadabscook Stream has dropped about a foot, resulting in a more manageable level for the race. A mandatory portage around Crawford's will be in place due to large pines in that area. Start will be at 12 PM at Vafiades Landing, Bog Rd, Hermon. Registration starts at 9 AM. A short course is available that starts at the same time as the hero race. The short course will end upstream of the Manning Mill Bridge, avoiding all of the hairy WW. For those with an appetite for hair there will be plenty of good WW from Manning Mill to Hampden Waterworks finish line. See Race Schedule page for contact info and other details.

The MaCKRO 2014 annual meeting has been set for Thursday October 23rd at the Sea Dog restaurant in Bangor. We have the back room reserved from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. and folks can just order off of the regular menu. As in the past recent annual meetings the necessary business will be conducted with an emphasis on celebrating the past paddle season. Hope you can join us for a relaxing evening and sharing paddle stories from this year.

--Thursday August 21 is the last Thursday evening races for 2014. and the last race in the MaCKRO flatwater series. Awards will be presented after the race for the C1, K1, C2, and K2 bragging rights races and the overall flatwater series. Vegetables could be included with the awards along with a special raffle prize for anyone who paddles Thursday night. Location is on the Stillwater in Orono, same as last week's race.
Saturday August 23rd is the Tour de Verona race around Verona Island. Start time is noon. This is a great open water marathon and the forecast calls for fair weather with relatively light winds which should make the ride not too rough on the south end of the island.
Saturday, Sept. 20 is the Ebb Tide Marathon on the Penobscot from Brewer to Winterport. Another good marathon on the Penobscot. Start time is 11:00 A.M. at the Brewer boat launch.

--August 3 will bring a challenging new addition to the summer race lineup. The 1st Annual Bashabez Penobscot River Canoe and Kayak Race is a 15 miler including flatwater and whitewater up to Class 3. Race information is here. Information on paddling this section of the Penobscot River is here.--
The Kennebec 50 miler is scheduled for Sunday, July 27th. The course for this race will run from the boat launch on Wyman Lake approximately 2 miles downstream from Caratunk and end at the boat launch in Norridgewock. This is the course that was run years ago when the race was previously done. There will be 3 pretty significant portages around Wyman Dam in Moscow, Caratunk Falls Dam in Solon, and the dam on Main Street in Madison. Specific details of the course and portages will be provided on the MaCKRO web site and will be sent to the MaCKRO member email list. If you plan on participating in the Kennebec 50 please contact Bill Anderson ( email@example.com ) or Dan Baumert (firstname.lastname@example.org or 884-8052). This will not necessarily be a race but more of an organized group paddle (although racing is not discouraged) so we would like to know who plans on participating beforehand and know who to expect.

--On Saturday June 21st is the Lions River Run on the Fish River in Fort Kent. The race is a total of 13.5 miles with approximately 2 miles of flat water in Eagle Lake and Soldier Pond. The Fish River is comprised of class I and II rapids with one class IV rapid at the Fish River falls which is a mandatory portage. --On Sunday June 22nd is the first event of the triple crown of Maine marathon canoe racing that is new for 2014. The first race of the triple crown will be on the Androscoggin River starting in Bethel and ending just west of Rumford. The start will be at the public access landing area in Bethel, between Hastings Island and Rt. 26. on the south side of the river at 11:00 A.M. The takeout will be a short distance west of the McDonalds on Rt 2 just upriver or west of Rumford. The total distance is approximately 22 miles. A map of the course is available. This is a very informal event with the focus on getting folks to comfortably enjoy the Androscoggin River with other paddlers. This section of the river is all flatwater where any type of flatwater boat could be used. For more information contact George Fatula at email@example.com

Saturday morning features the Meduxnekeag River Race (Houlton) as well as a Slalom Clinic in Bangor. Saturday afternoon features the downriver portion of the Combined Race of the Kenduskeag Slalom. -- The Passy River Race scheduled for Saturday, April 5 has been cancelled for this year due to ice on the river. The Waldo County YMCA hopes to see everyone at the St. George Race on Sunday. The St. George is now free of ice and at a great level right now -- and should remain at a great level for Sunday.

Come lend your elbow grease to our annual repair and outfitting session. Hosted by Gary at the Dysart's workshop across from the restaurant. The more the merrier, and bring your own boat/materials if you've got work that needs attention.
MaCKRO will have a booth for both days and will do an outfitting workshop.
25 Orono High students signed up to paddle this spring, doubling our record setting participation from last year. A few of these kids will be able to paddle together right from the get go at the St. George, but many will need an adult with them for the first couple races. So, if you're willing to paddle with a teenager, and haven't got one of your own, PLEASE consider helping out the Orono High GoActive! kids. In particular, experienced paddlers are needed for the St. George clinic and race combination and for the Passy clinic and race combination.

. . . The 2011 Maine canoe and kayak racing season kicks off on March 25 in Searsmont, Maine. The St. George River is typically among the first area rivers to ice out in early spring. The river combines flatwater and Class I, III, and III whitewater and is a great way to open up the season.
